Relationships

The quality of our relationships makes all the difference to our wellbeing, learning, and ability to cope with challenges. But we are rarely proactive in promoting positive relationships and wait until things go awry before we focus on what works. Being able to establish good relationships with students can make all the difference to their behaviour and learning. Both words and actions matter. There are things within our control and things we cannot change, so here we focus on the positive, the possible, and what we can influence. Teachers rarely appreciate the little things they do and say ,and the difference this can make. Words and actions both matter and make a difference in how individuals feel about themselves and others. This two-hour interactive webinar will: • Clarify why relationships are so critical to our well-being • Extend awareness of how the quality of relationships influences our lives at home and at work • Identify what is involved in a healthy relationship • Look at the evidence on how relationships influence student wellbeing and engagement. • Briefly explore how the ASPIRE principles inform the practice of relationships • Identify specific strategies that enable teachers to establish and maintain positive relationships with students, especially those who are challenging. • Give participants opportunities to discuss practical ideas to boost the quality of relationships in their own settings. By the end of this session, participants will understand why the quality of relationships matters, identify what works in establishing and maintaining a healthy relationship, and what difference a positive relationship makes to young people in school. We will also talk about the importance of social-emotional learning for both relationships and resilience, and how this might be introduced successfully in schools.
