The challenge

Students can remember what we've taught without really understanding it.

We've all experienced it.
Students can recall definitions, repeat explanations and answer questions correctly. But when we ask them to make connections, explain why something matters or apply their learning in a new situation, they sometimes struggle.
We want them to think deeply, ask questions and make sense of what they're learning. Yet with so much content to cover, it's easy for lessons to become focused on individual facts and skills rather than the bigger ideas that connect them.
How can we help students develop understanding that lasts beyond the lesson or the test?

IMAGINE A BETTER WAY

What if students could see the bigger picture behind what they're learning?

Concept-based teaching helps students move beyond learning isolated facts and skills to exploring the bigger ideas that connect them.

Instead of simply asking students what they know, we encourage them to think about why it matters, how ideas are connected and where they might apply their understanding.

And the good news? You don't need to abandon your curriculum or start planning from scratch. You can begin by looking at what you already teach through a different lens.

What if differentiation
didn't have to take hours?

For years, differentiation has often meant creating multiple versions of the same lesson.

But what if you could keep the same high-quality pedagogy while dramatically reducing the preparation?

What you will experience

This isn't a masterclass where you simply listen to someone explain concept-based teaching.

Through engaging activities, discussions and collaborative tasks, Ali will help you explore how concepts work and how you can begin using them in your own teaching.

You'll have opportunities to:

  • Distinguish between teaching facts and developing conceptual understanding.

  • Explore how concepts connect different ideas and learning experiences.

  • Consider questions that encourage students to think beyond recall.

  • Reflect on how you could use concepts in your existing lessons or units.

Most importantly, you'll begin to see how concept-based teaching can become part of your everyday practice, rather than something extra to add to your workload.
