About this programme
Students can complete classroom activities and recall facts without necessarily developing the conceptual understanding they need to use their learning in new situations. Language is central to changing this: students use it not only to communicate answers, but also to question, reason, construct and refine knowledge.
How can you design learning where language, thinking and subject understanding develop together?
In this practical two-day workshop, you will connect the foundations of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) with Pluriliteracies Teaching for Deeper Learning (PTDL). You will explore how disciplinary language, cognitive language functions and multimodal resources support increasingly sophisticated thinking.
Through classroom examples and collaborative activities, you will revisit the CLIL 4Cs, language of/for/through learning, scaffolding at word, sentence and text level, and the progression from activating knowledge to consolidating and transferring it.
You will reframe a lesson you already teach, design a Deeper Learning Episode using the PTDL planning framework, and share it for feedback.
What will change in your practice? You will be better equipped to design learning in which students use language to build, communicate and transfer deeper disciplinary understanding.
