About this programme

Your students may understand a concept, but when you ask them to explain their reasoning, justify an answer or analyse information, their responses don't always reflect what they know.

Sometimes they lack the vocabulary. Sometimes they don't know how to organise their ideas. And sometimes, they simply aren't sure what you're expecting when you ask them to describe, explain, analyse or evaluate.

How can you help your students communicate their understanding in the ways their subject requires?

In this practical one-day workshop, you'll explore Pluriliteracies Teaching for Deeper Learning (PTDL) and discover how language, thinking and subject knowledge develop together.

You'll examine how different subjects use language to construct and communicate knowledge, including disciplinary terminology, registers, genres and cognitive language functions.

Through classroom examples, you'll explore how to make expectations explicit and provide scaffolding that helps students produce increasingly sophisticated explanations, arguments and other subject-specific texts.

You'll also examine examples of Deeper Learning Episodes and use the PTDL planning framework to design a learning activity or language scaffold for your own classroom.

What will change in your practice? You'll be better equipped to help your students move from knowing something to explaining, communicating and applying that knowledge with greater precision, depth and independence.
