Responsibilities in education
Hello, I hope you had a wonderful weekend.
On Saturday night, I was invited at a dinner. I sat beside a teacher and we had a very interesting conversation about responsibilities in education.
As we talked, we reflected on the responsibilities we, as teachers, carry toward our students:
creating a safe and supportive learning environment
planning engaging lessons that meet diverse needs
offering feedback that helps students grow
But our students also depend on the responsibilities that parents carry:
ensuring children come to school rested and ready to learn
Ensuring students arrive on time
supporting homework routines
modeling curiosity and respect for learning at home
When these two sets of responsibilities work hand in hand, students truly thrive.
This got us wondering.
DO YOU MAKE THE RESPONSABILITIES OF PARENTS EXPLICIT TO YOUR STUDENTS’ PARENTS ?
For example:
Do you share expectations during parent meetings?
Do you provide a written agreement or learning contract?
Do you invite parents into conversations about how they can best support learning at home?
And most importantly: what responsibilities do you give parents, and how do you communicate them?
I’d love to hear your experiences:
HOW DO YOU MAKE THESE RESPONSIBILITIES CLEAR AND EXPLICIT? COULD YOU SHARE A FEW EXAMPLES?
